Reentry

RETURNING SAFELY · CHECKING YOUR HOME

Important: Do NOT return to your home until evacuation orders have been lifted and officials have deemed it safe to reenter the area.

This may take longer than you expect. Even when it seems that the wildfire has long passed, there are many reasons why fire managers may still ask you to stay out of the area. These include:

  • The fire is still active or unpredictable. Even if a fire looks “out,” it could rekindle in unburned areas or smolder underground for days.

  • There are hazards inside the evacuation zone, such as downed powerlines, damaged gas lines or propane tanks, or compromised structures.

  • Suppression work is still ongoing and firefighters need clear access. Civilian traffic can restrict access for engines/equipment and restrict crews’ abilities to respond quickly if conditions worsen.

  • Infrastructure still needs to be checked for safety. It takes time for bridges, roads, water systems, and power systems to be evaluated.

Please be patient when awaiting reentry. Officials and firefighters are working to minimize damage and exposure to hazards. Refer to the Relief Services page for resources available to residents immediately post-fire.
